Recently while I was on LinkedIn, I saw a blog post where the writer in the photo was shirtless. I didn’t even bother to read what they had to say.

A bit later, I saw a post from a woman job searching. Her title was certainly catchy, and I had every intent of reading it, but when I looked at her photo, I saw what I perceived as a smirk of attitude on her face. Needless to say, I didn’t read her post either.

We’ve all heard the old adage, “a picture is worth a 1000 words.” In 1862, Russian writer, Ivan Turgenev, wrote in Fathers and Sons, “a picture shows me at a glance what it takes dozens of pages of a book to expound.” In today’s world, where technology is a part of our everyday life and images fill our every waking moment, those words are even truer than they were 150+ years ago.

Professionalism-Rules-2

Just a glance at your LinkedIn picture will make users decide whether to read what you have to say or to simply move on to the next post. An exceptionally written summary or an extraordinary work experience section will make no difference if your picture sends the wrong message.

Make sure you have a professional picture to accompany your professional experience on your LinkedIn page. For more advice on professionalism, see my recent blog: Wear Your Name Tag on the Right, and Other Unwritten Rules of Professionalism.
